Essentials of Mind-Body Medicine

Monday, April 14th, 2008

New Elective Course

Title: Essentials of Mind-Body Medicine

Description: Through lecture, discussion, experiential exercises and processes, and case studies students will explore the basic assumption that illness and symptoms may have a message and that understanding and discovering their meaning can be the “key” that opens the door to healing and recovery. The essence of mind-body medicine is to stop, look inside, and listen to the healing from within. In a discussion of the mind/body connection and the role of attitude, beliefs, stresses and emotions and through the therapeutic use of guided imagery , mindfulness meditation and mind-body counseling techniques students will live the question “Where’s the Healing?” Students will explore how to integrate this approach with other naturopathic modalities as supports on the healing journey. How can we guide our patients to be more fully involved and to participate and engage more consciously in their getting well?

Learning Objectives:

  1. To deepen the understanding of the clinical significance of the mind-body connection and mind-body medicine perspectives and therapies.
  2. To experience and appreciate the healing power and therapeutic potential of mindfulness meditation, guided imagery and unconditional presence.
  3. To explore and discuss how to integrate mind-body perspectives and therapeutics into the practice of naturopathic medicine and naturopathic modalities.
  4. To appreciate that how we are with our patients may be as important as what we do, and who we are may be as important as what we know. The power of the healing relationship.

Instructor: Dr. Paul Epstein, N.D. Paul is a naturopathic physician, mind-body therapist, meditation teacher, and yoga teacher. How Biography Becomes Biology… Healing and the Mind-Body Connection
Our disease may tell a story, not just of our cells, but of ourselves, by taking the risk of listening, we may be led to the emotions, both positive and negative, that lie at the core of our authentic being.
with Paul Epstein, ND

The talk will focus on utilizing integrative medicine in treating the person as a whole. There will be a discussion on how our life histories and life stories affect our health and how healing happens when we embark on a journey home to our true and authentic selves. We will explore how to integrate this perspective in the process of treating disease.
Whether one is led to find and choose this journey by the trauma of childhood wounds or the pain of addiction or physical illness and disease or difficult psychological symptoms, ‘all roads lead to Rome’. All healing is ’self’ healing, and all sickness is home sickness. Illness and pain can be an opportunity for healing and recovery, and as we listen to its meaning and message, the healing journey meets the spiritual path.

In this lecture, discussion and experiential workshop with guided imagery and guided meditations, we will ask and live the questions, ‘What is healing?’ and ‘Where and how does it happen?’. We will look to resolve the issue of how to be with our struggles, pain, stress and disease in a way that is wise, compassionate and healing?
Dr. Paul Epstein is a Naturopathic Physician and Meditation Teacher specializing in treating people with chronic symptoms, stress related disorders and immune system diseases. Utilizing natural therapeutics and mind-body therapies of imagery, meditation and counseling he integrates the mind, attitudes, beliefs, stresses and emotions in the healing process. Paul has practices in Westport CT, and Manhattan.
