Curing vs Healing
In the beginning when I first came to Dr. Paul Epstein for his help, insight and direction, I had no idea what healing really meant. I knew how Webster had defined it (“the act of curing, or of restoring to health”). Healing was a concept that I really couldn’t wrap myself around. It was a nice word. But what did it mean?
After meeting regularly with Paul, I began to understand what healing is all about. He taught me about the great importance of healing in the whole scheme of things. The fact is, he showed me that I had choices to make, possibilities to consider, roads to take and those to avoid in life. He showed me that living today (“living in the now”) is what is critical. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is still a dream. But today is the time to live life, experience joy, serve others and accept things the way they are and not the way I’d want them or expect them to be.
If Paul has a slogan, it is probably his mantra: "serenity is not freedom from the storm, it is peace amid the storm."
Paul showed me how to face and live with cancer and heart trouble, among other things. His alternative treatment co-exists with modern medicine and is an important adjunct to it. The two forms of medicine have served me well, thanks to Paul. He has been there when I needed him in sickness, in my own brand of chaos and panic. He is more than a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist or cardiologist. He in truth is an all-around healer of mind and body. He is one of a kind. He has shown me the road to healing—and it’s straight ahead!
